In 1963, the two purchased the old Catholic church on the Grand Marais hillside, which remains the Art Colony’s home today. Until 1981, Birney and Byron, along with fellow art teacher Harvey Turner, ran the colony. Webmer art colony in Grand Marais took hold with remarkable tenacity.
